Portrait Gem #
NOVEMBER CHALLENGE 🖤
Bonjour my little demon, ready to collect gem #21?
Whether you just joined or have been here from the beginning, thank you so much for reading.
TODAY’S GEM
Yesterday, I shared 5 rules to improve storytelling in your portraits, and I mentioned a key tip: create a paradox.
Today, let me explain why your portraits need paradox.
Paradox is what makes your characters unforgettable. It’s that subtle contradiction that adds depth and leaves viewers intrigued. A paradox can make a character feel human, relatable, and layered.
For example:
- A warrior with a delicate, sorrowful expression.
- A demon with a serene, angelic smile.
- A childlike fairy with battle scars.
These contrasts create tension and curiosity. They tell a story beyond the surface and make your portrait stand out.
Here’s how to incorporate paradox into your next portrait:
1️⃣ Think about your character’s personality—what’s their most defining trait? Now, ask yourself: What’s the opposite of that trait?
2️⃣ Introduce subtle visual elements that hint at this contradiction. It could be in their expression, their outfit, or the details in the background.
3️⃣ Don’t overdo it—the best paradoxes are subtle and leave room for interpretation.
Paradox isn’t just about adding complexity; it’s about creating contrast that sparks curiosity. Try it in your next portrait, and let me know how it feels!
Here’s an example:
My portrait depicts a face of grace and ethereal beauty, framed by delicate flowers. Yet, this face, which should have remained immaculate, is stained. The brooch adorned with a large, scrutinizing eye adds an element of intrigue: what is it observing so intently?

Tomorrow’s Gem will dive into a practical step-by-step process to stylize your portraits further—don’t miss it!
Bisous,
Léa
