#24 I have no talent for portraits
NOVEMBER CHALLENGE 🖤
Bonjour my little demon, ready to collect gem #24?
Whether you just joined or have been here from the beginning, thank you so much for reading.
TODAY’S GEM
It's already the last Sunday of November, and I’ve got something special for you.
Since the start of Portrait Gems, you've sent me hundreds of questions, and many of them still need answers. So, I had an idea: starting tomorrow, I’ll take you through my artistic journey—from sketching on the floor of my bedroom to becoming a full-time traveling artist with a six-figure income.
Through this quirky yet passionate story, I want to show you how I overcame the exact challenges you’re facing right now in portrait drawing—how I tackled issues like proportions, storytelling, and stylization, and turned them into strengths.
By the end of this week, I’ll even share my straightforward plan for learning stylized portraits without unnecessary detours, so you can achieve in three months what took me three years of trial and error.
Sound good?
To kick things off, here’s one of my old drawings:

Not impressive, right? 😂
I said it’s an 'old drawing,' but in reality, I was already 20 when I made it... So I can officially say I wasn’t born with talent. And it sounds cliché, but clearly, if I can do it, so can you. (Seriously, just look at it 😂)
My secret to progress? Not talent—just hard work, smart practice, and staying passionate.
I can’t help with hard work or passion—that’s all you. But I can help you work smart, and that’s exactly what we’ll dive into next week.
Enjoy your Sunday, because tomorrow we start something exciting.
Voilà, that’s all for me.
Bisou, Léa.
